Fancy making your own salad after yesterday's sinful fried stuff? Here's how. I've concoted this salad receipe which i always make when i feel like having my greens. It's easy to make and the stuff are readily available from the supermarket.
Madchemist's Garden Salad (for 2)
2 bulbs of Butterhead Lettuce
1 packet Rocket Lettuce
1 Tomato
1/2 can of Pineapples rings
2 Eggs
2 tubes of silk Tofu
100ml Italian Dressing
Procedure:
1. To prepare the hard boiled eggs, place 2 eggs in a pot of cold water and bring it to a boil. (Never put cold eggs in boiling water. It will crack). To achieve best hardboiled eggs with firm egg whites and soft and pastey yolks, allow the eggs to boil in the water for only 2 min after the water has boiled. turn off the fire immediately and let the egg simmer in hot water for 3-4min before taking out. To check that the egg yolk has solidified, spin the egg, stop it with 2 fingers and release it. If inertia forces it continue spinning, it means the egg is still liquid. A solidified egg will not spin. Cut the eggs into quaters.
2. Simultaneously while the egg was cooking, pluck the butterhead lettuce from the stalk and break it into bite size. So the same for the rocket. Prepare a really large salad bowl ( or 2 for each person). Wash the leaves and place it in your salad bowl. Swing away as much moisture as possible.
3. Cut the pineapple rings into bite size and throw them into your salad bowl.
4. Cut the tomatoes into eights and throw them into the salad bowl.
5. Cut the tubes of tofu into 2cm chunks. Halve them into bite size. Throw them into the salad bowl. (Tofu is already cooked when you buy it. You just need to wash if you wish.)
6. You can store your salad in the fridge until you want to eat them. Add the italian dressing and toss evenly before consumption. (Adding it too early will turn your crisp salad soggy). Therefore, eat fresh! Enjoy.
~~~
If you are on a diet, you may wish to omit the egg yolk. Other than that, this receipe is perfectly healthy. Always choose non-cream based salad dressing. That's to say, no mayonase, thousand islands, caesar, honey mustard, etc. The best is french dressing and italian dressing, which is vineger and herb based. Some dressings are rich in sugar though, like sweet and sour dressings. But at least sugar is better than fat on this account.
Pineapples really makes this salad inviting. Cos its sweet and sour. Wets your appetite.
Some people think tofu is so out of place in salads. I think not. It has a nice and soft texture and it really serves as a contrast to the crisp lettuce. Besides, it's a real good source of PROTEIN leh.
I think all my effort had paid off after so many hours of planning and liasing with the lab staff in NUS. Right from the begining of discussing what to teach the students, searching for suitable experiments for them to do, ordering reagents, preparing lesson plan, prepare students for practical, to the actual practical held today on the 18th March.
It's something like a mini module on antioxidant. Imagine having to teach that to a bunch of secondary 2 kids. I think even undergrads have problem understanding it. But i made the effort to simplify my explanations, use interesting analogies, interactive power point slides, video clips, charts, molecular models and not to mention create my own lecture notes and practical protcol. Yes! Lecture notes and practical protocols! I feel like a module co-ordinator! I've walked them through 5 afternoons of theory and practicals and today thay have set out to perform what is required of them.
Sec 2 kids can understand antioxidants? Unbelievable right? I made that happen. That's why it is such a big achievement. Hee. I think monetary wise is not that important. What's more important is the valuable experience that I've gained from it: Applying the teaching skills, Liasing with lab, Ordering reagents, Writing notes and handouts, Planning for lessons, Conduct practical, Discussion of results... All in one pot: Teacher Aid program.
I don't really have the intention of being a teacher but i think it is a form of exposure and experience. There were so many people in today's lesson, watching how i conduct the lesson: lab manager, teaching assistants, experienced teachers and other NUS staff. I was rather nervous but i manage to perform once the ball has started rolling. It was my first time standing on stage with a marker pen and a mike, in front of the white board giving instructions to students. Moreover, this lab is the one which I've been using for the past 2 years. The only difference is that for this practical, I'm not the student but the conducting TA.
It was stressful. So many experienced personal watching me. A year 2 student. So green and yet the conducting TA. NUS staff watched. Teachers watched. I'm glad that there were smiles on their faces and nods everytime i said something important. Their smiles and nods are priceless signs of encouragement and an indication of my ability. I was a great challenge. NUS staff and teachers think so too. I chose a practical meant for year 2 life science students. But the kids are secondary 2. And they managed it. That is my sense of achievement.
Many thanks to all who made this possible. I'm so happy that I've managed to accomplish such a challenging task assigned to me. With this achievement, there will certainly be more challenges ahead for me. More assignments to undertake. More schools to conduct. With every experience made me a more confident TA in front of a class.
I'm so happy today. Yay.... :)
dun bother you....
This phrase, so much touching and
so much truth in it...
For you and i are only born for
today, not for tomorrow or yesterday...
Therefore,
every burden and every troubles
you have,
forget about them at this very minute,
for to not to forget is to
imprison yourself....
In a world of sorrows and pain,
where only you alone
will be inflicted with it,
feeling all the pains....
Since no one is there to truly
understand how you feel,
why not take the time
to forget about the sorrows
and treat it as an experiences
Of course, its not easy
but it will be better than
causing yourself to be sorrow
Afterall, who knows whether tomorrow
will be here....
What is important is only today,
right this moment....
Have you done what you hoped
to do or are you still trapped
in the world of yourself???
Scientists around the world have paid tribute to British scientist Francis Crick, co-discover of the structure of DNA and the simple way in which genetic material is copied, who passed away on Wednesday night. He died at a hospital in San Diego, California, where he had been battling colon cancer. He was 88.
Crick is credited with a number of important discoveries but will be best remembered for determining the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in 1953.
Crick and his US collaborator James Watson described a double helix linked by rungs, each of which was a pair made from two of the four "letters" of DNA. They suggested this could be the means for copying genetic material. The implications were profound as DNA proved to be nothing less than the inherited template for creating and sustaining life.
"I will always remember Francis for his extraordinarily focused intelligence and for the many ways he showed me kindness and developed my self-confidence," said Watson. "Until his death, Francis was the person with whom I could most easily talk about ideas. He will be sorely missed."
Golden age
The pair's work laid the foundations for future work in genetics and is widely acknowledged as one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the last century. Crick and Watson, along with Maurice Wilkins, were awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1962 for the research.
"Francis Crick made an enormous contribution to science and his discoveries helped to usher in a golden age of molecular biology," said Lord May, president of Britain's Royal Society.
During celebrations held in April 2003 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of their discovery, a plaque was unveiled at The Eagle pub in Cambridge, UK, where Crick and Watson had gone after making their discovery and had told bemused regulars that they had found "the secret of life".
Crick's other discoveries include the relationship between DNA and genetic coding. He found that genes are digital codes written on DNA molecules, which can be expressed as three-letter words, and was instrumental in cracking the code. Crick and Vernon Ingram also found that genetic material is crucial in determining the specificity of different proteins.
Scientific pantheon
"Francis Crick made not one but many great scientific discoveries," said Matt Ridley, author of Genome and Nature Vs Nurture. "Any one of those would have got him a place in the scientific pantheon. Discovering all three places him alongside Newton, Darwin and Einstein."
Steve Jones, professor of genetics at University College London added: "Francis Crick was the Charles Darwin of the 20th century."
Crick moved to the United States in the mid-1970s, settling in La Jolla, California. He published over 130 scientific papers and several books, and was awarded many international prizes.
Mounting evidence suggests sex helps keep us healthy
Okay, so maybe there’s some wishful thinking going on — the science isn’t exactly iron-clad — but evidence is accumulating that the more sex you have, the better off you are.
There is one caveat, though. “We do not have good data to show a direct connection [to all-around good health]," says Jennifer Bass, the head of information services at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction in Bloomington, Ind. "We know that healthier people have more sexual activity. But we do not know which comes first. Does the good health make you more willing to have sex, or does the sex have a positive impact?”
And you dirty girrrls and Don Juans should know that the assumed health benefits of sex are generally thought to accrue to people in loving, monogamous relationships or those flying solo. Risky sex with lots of partners will probably do more harm than good.
But while researchers try to nail down the impact on overall health, data is mounting when it comes to some specifics. Here are several potential benefits:
1. Easing depression and stress
Bass says this is pretty definite. “The release from orgasm does much to calm people. It helps with sleep, and that is whether we talk about solo sex or sex with a partner,” she says.
But wait, there’s more. A recent study of college students at the State University of New York in Albany suggests that semen acts as an antidepressant. Females in the study who were having sex without condoms (see safe sex caution, above) had fewer signs of depression than women who used condoms or abstained from sex.
“These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms,” the authors wrote, “and evidence which shows that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration.”
I kid you not, ladies. Semen is good stuff. It gives a shot of zinc, calcium, potassium, fructose, proteins -- a veritable cornucopia of vitality!
2. Relieving pain
Orgasm is a powerful pain-killer. Oxytocin, a natural chemical in the body that surges before and during climax, gets some of the credit, along with a couple of other compounds like endorphins.
According to a study by Beverly Whipple, professor emeritus at Rutgers University and a famed sexologist and author, when women masturbated to orgasm “the pain tolerance threshold and pain detection threshold increased significantly by 74.6 percent and 106.7 percent respectively.”
3. Boosting cardio health
I can’t resist another plug for semen. It’s possible that male goo can lower blood pressure. Another recent study found that women who gave their men oral sex, and swallowed, had a lower risk of preeclampsia, the dangerously high blood pressure that sometimes accompanies pregnancy.
No, I’m not making this up. “The present study shows that oral sex and swallowing sperm is correlated with a diminished occurrence of preeclampsia,” said the Dutch authors.
See? We told you it was good for you.
There have been other studies showing that sex lowers blood pressure, and might even protect against strokes because of its stress-relieving ability.
But when we think of sex and the cardio system, we tend to think of poor old Nelson Rockefeller having a heart attack in flagrante delicto. Well, not only does that hardly ever happen, but sex might actually protect the heart. A 2002 report from a large British population of men said “some protection from fatal coronary events may be an added bonus” of frequent sexual intercourse.
4. Countering prostate cancer
Over the past few years, several journals have published studies showing that the more ejaculations the better.
Now the Journal of the American Medical Association, no less, has reported that “high ejaculation frequency was related to decreased risk of total prostate cancer.” It doesn’t matter how a man climaxes -- intercourse or masturbation. So next time he says, “Really, honey, it’s therapy,” he could be telling the truth.
5. Healing wounds
Some evidence suggests sex can be rejuvenating to the point of helping wounds to heal faster. Several experiments have shown that oxytocin can help even stubborn sores, like those suffered by diabetics, to heal by regenerating certain cells.
6. Fighting aging
Maybe it’s the rejuvenation, maybe the happiness, maybe all of the above. One thing’s for sure: “Use it or lose it” is literally true. For example, postmenopausal women often suffer from “vaginal atrophy,” which is what it sounds like and can lead to all sorts of complications like urinary tract infections. What’s one way to prevent it? More intercourse.
Sex is a form of exercise, after all, and like all exercise, it burns calories and can help battle the onslaught of the years. In fact, nursing home experts say they wish oldsters would have more sex.
Can sex really make you live longer? Maybe. In the same population of British men I cited earlier, researchers found a 50 percent reduction in overall mortality in the group of men who said they had the most orgasms. There was a dose response: the more orgasms, the better.
Of course, as Kinsey’s Bass reminds us, it could be that these blokes were just healthier and felt like having sex more often. But since there’s no evidence that lots of sex is bad for you, what have you got to lose?
DPM Lee on private, unofficial visit to meet friends in Taiwan: MFA
By Hwee Goh, Channel NewsAsia
"SINGAPORE : China has protested against Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's visit to Taiwan, saying Singapore has to take all responsibilities for the consequences.
It said Mr Lee made the so-called unofficial visit "regardless of solemn representations repeatedly made by China".
Chinese state television quoted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue as saying that China is firmly opposed to official exchanges in any form between Taiwan and countries that have diplomatic ties with China.
She said Mr Lee's visit would damage China's core interest and the political foundation for China-Singapore relations, and hurt the feelings of 1.3 billion Chinese people.
Responding, Singapore's Foreign Ministry said Mr Lee was on a private and unofficial visit to Taiwan to meet friends. He last visited them in 1992.
MFA added that Singapore has consistently maintained a "One-China" policy, and does not support independence for Taiwan.
It said Mr Lee's private visit does not in any way change this policy, nor does it represent any challenge to China's sovereignty or territorial integrity.
The Foreign Ministry said Singapore values its close and extensive ties with China, and that it would be regrettable if they were to be affected by this private visit.
Meanwhile, the Monetary Authority of Singapore said that this year's MAS Lecture, due to be held on Wednesday, has been cancelled.
The speaker, Dr Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People's Bank of China, has cancelled his trip to Singapore. - CNA
Put inside the oven at 220C for 12 min and whala... pizza... what taste you want also can. Whahaha...
I din expect my base to be successful this time so only managed to scavenge some ham and capsicum for my pizza but it still turned out wonderfully well... next time, I'll add other traditional pizza toppings that gives it an authentic feel.
